My laptop only reads BUT WON\’T OPEN files from the memory stick. Please help !?

At first I thought all flies and works existed on this flash drive got deleted by accident long ago but just today I decided to reuse it to save new works and found out that all of my old works and files are still in the flash drive. However, when click to open and view the memory stick, there was nothing in it. It even said this folder is empty. Though when I went back to MY COMPUTER, it shows that my flash drive has 66 MB left out of a 7.88 GB memory stick. In some way, I think my laptop still READS the memory stick. This is why I think that all my old works and flies are still existed but in the meantime I don’t really understand why they won’t show up Does anybody know what happend ? Is there a freeware that would actually take care of this problem ?? My laptop is a window 7, thank you.
