Iphone 4? or another, different smart phone?

I’m from the UK and just lost my phone so am looking to buy a new one.

I have an ipod touch, a mac and love apples products…just seemed to make sense to buy a iphone. Went into town today with a mate, and looked around and they said a new one would be coming out soon and I might as well wait. My mate wasn’t bothered with an iphone and looked at some of the others…I didn’t realize how good phones had gotten, I thought it was iphone or nothing good…he’s got some internet phone with 300 minutes and unlimited texts and internet which is an awesome phone for £15 a month…is it worth the extra £20 + phone costs and so on for the iphone?

So basically – in short…is the iphone really that much better, i have a touch, that deals with my music, would something like the sony Erickson x10 or blackberry or one of the HTC phones??
